Introduction
North Oxford is generally regarded as one of England's finest Victorian suburbs. The area boundaries are the river Cherwell to the east, the Oxford Canal to the west, St. Giles' Church to the south and Summertown to the north. Development began on a small scale before 1850 and continued until 1930 but most houses were built and the character of the suburb was established between 1850 and 1914.
North Oxford is famously middle class and it is commonly held that the area was built for newly-married University dons and that the houses are all built in a Domestic Gothic style with lots of gables, pointed headed windows and ironwork finials. The truth, as we shall show, is more complex.
